The papers presents the results of data analysis obtained in the project the social structure and the 'quality of life', carried out in 1989/90. The aim of this paper was to determine the interrelationship between levels of education and social background. The social background of the different educational groups was established on the basis of their class memberships. This was, in turn, decided by taking into account the examinee's father's occupation and the post he last held. The relationship between the examinee's qualification and that of his/her parents was also examined. The data suggest that the significant improvement in our examinees' qualifications as compared to those of their parents is to be interpreted as a result of a dynamic modernization, rather than any degree of upward social mobility.en
