A contribution to defining and determining software quality

Abstract

The contemporary way of living of today's business world requires speed and efficiency. For the successful conduct of business, it is necessary to overcome physical boundaries. New technological achievements allow us, if we have a computer and Internet access, to become a part of the electronic world in an easy manner. Today's market is characterized by a multitude of software solutions that cover almost all areas of human activity. Only those manufacturers who are directed towards the management of user demands and the management of quality software characteristics development, as well as who follow the characteristics during the utilization phase along with conscious actions in the direction of exceeding user expectations, will be able to keep their market positions. Recognizing the importance of this field, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), within the scope of Joint Technical Committee ISO/IEC JTC 1 (Information technology), Subcommittee SC7 (Software engineering), developed international standard ISO/IEC 9126 which offers recommendations for the defining of quality attributes (quality characteristics) of the software system, as well as software metrics based on which it is possible to measure the quality of the software, taking also into account the purpose of its use. This paper presents the methodology for defining and monitoring of software characteristic quality, on the example of an application for Masters Studies courses registration, relying on the recommendations of the above mentioned international standard.
