Abstract: In software engineering, models may be used to specify, simulate, test, verify and generate code for the application to be built. Many of these activities include the specification and execution of model-to-model (M2M) transformations. During these transformations model elements are traced from a model at the higher level of abstraction to a model at the lower level of abstraction and vice versa, achieved through meta-modeling. Reengineering is one of the key concepts in software maintenance and evolution. In the paper we discuss the importance of meta-modeling in the context of database reengineering.
