Abstract: The existence of growing conflicts between business development and
demands for environmental protection and natural resources imposes the need for
appropriate measurement of negative environmental impacts of companies. For these
reasons, the authors of the paper are recommending the use of ecological/eco footprint
(EF) as an index for the assessment of environmental sustainability, having in mind its wide
applicability to the personal, regional, national and global levels, as well as ability of
usage EF in the case of business, industries and companies (the paper deals with case
study of a food industry company). The paper emphasizes that ecological footprint as a
method is widely recognized as a tool which point out the environmental impacts of
analyzed subject. Thus, EF enables further implementation of other detailed and accurate
method for minimizing environmental impacts and achieving business objectives in
accordance with the principles of sustainability for sustainable development.
